Ponds in exterior design

Landscaping a garden or patio area is a great way to not only create a wonderful feature in the home, but done well it can also add value to the property.  When considering landscaping options, many people choose to add a water feature.  These come in many forms and there is bound to be something to suit every taste, type of garden and available budget.

Ponds

Small ponds or water pools can be created by using old barrels for an above ground feature, taking up the smallest of corners in the garden.  These are ideal for limited outside spaces, such as a courtyard or roof terrace.  People with floor space at a premium can always opt for a wall mounted water feature.  This works simply by attaching the water supply to the back of the unit, with the hose carefully covered with climbing plants or boxed in.  The pump recycles the water from the lower bowl back up to the spout.  Outdoor dining to the sound of trickling water will impress guests and create a tranquil atmosphere.  Some carefully placed outdoor furniture

in proximity to the feature will enhance the effect.

Those with larger spaces have a very wide choice of styles available to them.  From large, deep open ponds ideal for fish such as Koi, to dramatic stone waterfalls, the only limit is the imagination.  There are many companies in the phone book or online that can draw up designs to suit the new garden, and even the most elaborate water features take very little time to create

How to build a pond

For an in-ground water feature such as a pond, it is first necessary to excavate the required hole.  Ensure that all sharp stones and other objects are removed from the area, and cover the exposed earth with pond liner that can be bought at most garden centres.  Always leave plenty of overhang, as the liner material will settle when filled with water.  Start filling the pond slowly by use of a garden hose; this could take a while depending on the diameter and depth of the hole.  Once the pond area is filled with water, it must be left for a while (ideally overnight) to permit it to settle.  The edges of the pond and any exposed liner can then be covered using stones.

If a waterfall or fountain feature is to be added to the pond, a pump will be needed.  For a waterfall the pump must be powerful enough to send water up PVC piping to the top of the waterfall feature.  If a fountain is to be added, it will be necessary to wade into the pond and place the pump at the desired position.  Quality pumps are adjustable so that if a larger volume of water is needed to create a higher spurt in a fountain, or a cascading effect from the waterfall, it is possible to adjust the flow.  The pond is now ready to be dressed with plants, and have outdoor furniture strategically placed, to get the full effect of the brand new water feature.

Koi Ponds - building the best pond for you

Aquajoy build koi ponds to be appropriate for your own needs. Koi ponds are built in many diffrent ways depending on your requirements, some examples of Koi ponds are brick built stone, raised and even at ground level. There are quite a few different options to choose from.

Something to give some thought to is the level of koi pond you desire, the scale of the pond and the way you want it finished. A large amount koi ponds will need a professional filtering system with bottom drains, mid feeds and high quality filtration, this is determined by the dimensions pond fish stocks along with overall pond that you would like to accomplish.

Another consideration is the kind of construction process ie a butyl lined koi pond to a block built and fibreglass koi pond, listed below are some basic phases of a koi pond being built.

We also ask people to take into consideration other options which includes fountains, features, waterfalls, and even aquarium style viewing windows which could be included into your pond project.
